The Spiegel Wall/Ceiling Lamp by Verpan is a striking example of Verner Panton’s visionary approach to lighting design. Originally created in 1969 for the editorial offices of Der Spiegel magazine, the lamp is characterized by its sculptural simplicity and architectural presence. Crafted from pressed, brushed aluminum, its square form is interrupted by a recessed circular center that houses the light source, creating a soft, ambient glow that reflects subtly off the metal surface. The interplay of shape and shadow brings depth and a dynamic quality to the fixture, whether mounted on the wall or ceiling.
More than a functional object, the Spiegel Lamp serves as a bold artistic statement. Its minimalist silhouette and refined industrial aesthetic make it an ideal fit for contemporary interiors, adding a sense of quiet sophistication to living rooms, hallways, and commercial spaces. The design’s ability to work individually or in multiples allows for creative flexibility, transforming plain surfaces into illuminated compositions. As with many of Panton’s designs, the Spiegel Lamp merges geometry and light in a way that is both timeless and avant-garde.
