The Runner Rug by Anni Albers brings the pioneering Bauhaus textile artist's approach to pattern and abstraction into a contemporary floor covering. A flowing, interlaced motif in contrasting dark and light tones travels along the length of the rug, creating a sense of movement through the repetition of curving lines. Its elongated proportions are particularly suited to hallways and entrances.
Albers was interested in the ability of textiles to combine visual expression with practical function. Through her work with weaving, she explored the relationships between line, rhythm, texture, and material. The Runner reflects this sensibility with an abstract composition whose impact comes from the movement of its pattern rather than traditional pictorial imagery.
One of the most influential textile artists of the twentieth century, Anni Albers studied at the Bauhaus under the direction of Gunta Stölzl. After moving to the United States in 1933, she continued her work as an artist, teacher, and writer, helping establish weaving as an important form of modern art. Her designs remain influential in both contemporary interiors and textile design.
