Riddled Buffet by Horm

Steven Holl designed the Riddled Buffet as a sideboard with five separate storage compartments. Each has a different profile and a different pattern cut into its ebony face. Gray or black painted aluminum panels connect the compartments, framing open spaces between them and giving the long, low cabinet an asymmetrical front.

For the folded forms, Horm bonds ebony veneer to fabric to make a 2.2 mm sheet it calls Origami Wood. Laser-cut lines allow the sheet to fold at the corners, while the perforations let light through the wood. Each compartment opens independently and has a magnetic door closure. At nearly 79 inches wide, the buffet provides a long serving surface for a dining room.
