The Original Ptolomeo® Vertical Bookcase, designed by Bruno Rainaldi, is a striking example of minimalist Italian design that transforms the way books are stored and displayed. Its innovative concept centers on a sleek vertical metal column with thin, cantilevered shelves that disappear behind stacked books, creating the illusion of a free-standing column of literature. The design strips away excess, letting the books themselves become the visual focus, while the structure provides a surprisingly stable and space-efficient storage solution.
First introduced in 2003 and awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro in 2004, the Ptolomeo has become a contemporary design icon. It is named after Ptolemy I, founder of the Library of Alexandria, symbolizing the enduring value of knowledge and the timeless beauty of books. The bookcase is suitable for a wide range of interiors, from modern minimalist spaces to eclectic or artistic environments, and can stand alone as a sculptural piece or be used in multiples for dramatic effect.
Manufactured by Opinion Ciatti in Italy, the Original Ptolomeo is available in a variety of finishes, including matte black, glossy white, stainless steel, and corten-effect steel. The clean lines and refined craftsmanship ensure both aesthetic appeal and lasting durability. Whether holding a modest collection or forming a bold centerpiece, the Ptolomeo is a functional piece of art that celebrates the presence of books in the living space.
