Marcel Breuer was not the inventor of the cantilevered tubular steel chair (that credit goes to Mart Stam); he his, however, responsible for devleoping and refining the possibilities, of which his Cesca Armchair is one.
The Cesca chair is very simple in form; yet quite comfortable and exemplary in its use of the Bauhaus design philosophy. Bauhaus furniture design was based on the premise that it was neccessary to develop new and radically different forms for the pieces of furniture that would be in the modern home. The cantilevered form shown here in steel, beech, and cane is now so familiar that it is hard to imagine the shock of seeing a chair without back legs, formed from a continuous loop of chrome-plated steel.
Breuer is famous for a number of furniture designs, though perhaps no chair design is more famous than his Wassily Chair. Designed in 1925, the Wassily chair was the first bent-tubular steel-framed chair.
Marcel Breuer designed the Cesca Chair in 1928. The chair was named "Ceska" as a tribute to his daughter Cheska.
