Josef Hoffmann was born in Austria in 1870. At the age of 17 Hoffmann began studying classic architecture in Brunn. He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Karl Freiherr Von Hasenauer. At that time, Von Hasenauer was one of Europe's most sought after architects. Following Von Hasenauer's death, Otto Wagner, yet another famed 19th century architect, took over Von Hasenauer's position at the Academy. Wagner recognized Josef Hoffmann's aspiring talent and he went onto work for Wagner later in his career.
This model was the original version of the chair designed by Hoffman for the Café Fledermaus in Vienna (1907). Hoffmann designed several versions of this chair (another being our b2h808fd) along with tables and other accompanying furniture. Kohn & Kohn put many of which into production in 1907.
