A central square in warm orange is surrounded by carefully proportioned bands of ochre and neutral tones, creating a subtle interplay of color and light. The geometric design appears straightforward, yet its visual effect changes as the adjacent colors are perceived together.

Albers developed the Homage to the Square series beginning in 1950 as a continuing investigation into color relationships. Using the same basic arrangement of nested squares, he demonstrated how the placement of different hues could alter their apparent intensity, depth, and character. Preparedness exemplifies this approach to abstraction, placing the emphasis on color rather than representational imagery.

Josef Albers studied and taught at the Bauhaus, where the integration of art, craft, and design shaped his work. After leaving Germany in 1933, he continued his teaching career in the United States at Black Mountain College and Yale University. His work as an artist and educator made him a central figure in twentieth-century modernism.

Produced by Christopher Farr as part of the CF Editions collection, this rug is made in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. The design is part of an edition of 250 and is hand tufted in wool to preserve the character of Albers' original composition.

Made by Christopher Farr of London.

Dimensions: Width 69" Depth 69" (175 × 175 cm)

Materials: Millspun wool.
