The composition features a carefully balanced sequence of nested squares in muted gray and blue tones. Though the geometry is simple, the interaction of the colors creates a subtle impression of depth and movement.

Albers began his Homage to the Square paintings in 1950 and continued to investigate how the appearance of one color could change according to the colors surrounding it. Gray Instrumentation brings this study into a textile format, retaining the precise proportions and understated palette that define the original artwork. The result is both a functional rug and an expression of modern abstract art.

Painter, sculptor, and teacher Josef Albers was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. He studied and later taught at the Bauhaus before emigrating to the United States in 1933, where he taught at Black Mountain College and Yale University. His experiments with color and perception continue to influence artists and designers.

The rug is produced as part of Christopher Farr's CF Editions collection in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. The design is part of an edition of 250, with the original artwork translated into wool using traditional hand-tufting techniques.

Made by Christopher Farr of London.

Dimensions: Width 69" Depth 69" (175 × 175 cm)

Materials: Millspun wool.
