Lilly Reich is probably best known as the personal and professional assistant to Mies van der Rohe from 1925 to 1938. This particular item was designed in 1927, just three years before she joined Mies at the Bauhaus School in Dessau. It shows off her early talent as a modernist designer, and a technical ability in the relatively new craft of tubular steel bending.
While at Bauhaus, Reich taught interior design and furniture design. It is said that she was a constant companion of Mies van der Rohe during this time. Together they collaborated on many exhibitions, and perhaps most notably, Mies did not create any successful furniture items before he met Lilly Reich, or after their relationship ended. Two examples of their hugely popular furniture designs include the Barcelona Lounge Chair and Brno Chair.
