The A14 Chair was originally created in Thonet Boppard, Germany workshop in 1855. The mass production of the Michael Thonet designed bentwood A14 has just celebrated its 150th year of manufacturing.
As early as 1840 Michael Thonet started experiments with bent veneers in an effort to reduce the number of separate pieces of wood being used in chairs. These early techniques were successful in reducing the number of pieces in chairs from 10 to 5. Further reduction became the focal point of Michael Thonet's work.
In his effort to reduce the number of pieces used in building chairs, he had to connect the main elements that existed on different planes. This could only be achieved by bending wood. Michael Thonet's further experimentation with bending wood yielded amazing results. By the 1850s, Michael Thonet's bentwood styles had become mainstream, and he was on his way to creating a catalog of chairs yet to be rivaled.
