The Frank Lloyd Wright Barrel Chair was designed in 1937. The Barrel Chair was designed for the home of Herbert Johnson known as Wingspread. It was constructed with natural cherrywood. Leather was used on the original version. Though it has become a very famous chair in its own right, it is actually a redesign of a chair Wright originally created in 1904.
As seen in so many Frank Lloyd Wright chairs, he again uses the vertical lines and geometric shapes. This particular chair served the same purpose as the Robie and Roberts chair as it provided a screen around a table, providing a heightened sense of intimacy.
With a great love for working with wood, Wright is quoted as saying,...With the exception of the Japanese, wood has been misused and mishandled everywhere." The Barrel Chair is an extreme example of Frank Lloyd Wright's love for this material
