Description :

Eero Saarinen designed this lounge chair in the 1950's, as a part of a seating series for the lobbies of The General Motors Technology Center in Warren, Michigan. Veering away from his usual inspiration, organic elements, he looked to the revolutionary design of a stock car for inspiration. He specifically focused on the stock car seat, which was known for not only its comfort but also its superb construction and upholstery.

To accurately represent the design of the stock car seat Eero Saarinen first conquered the difficulty of obtaining a perfectly horizontal surface through the seat and armrests. Also, Saarinen leaning away from fiberglass, the original material for the frame of a stock car seat, had to devise a method of having the leather adhere perfectly to the frame for an aerodynamic look. Lastly, the importance of the seat having a slight angle to the rear, so that the person lounging would have the same feel of sitting back into the drivers seat of a stock car.

To this day some of the original lounge series still appears in the lobbies of General Motor Headquarters, also a prototype of this chair appears in the M.O.M.A. These reproductions are the first to be manufactured since the original design and pieces back in the 1950's.
